Is a Partial Knee Replacement Enough?
A partial may be the right call if:
Your pain sits mostly on one side of the knee, often the inner side
Imaging shows arthritis in one compartment rather than throughout the joint
Your knee ligaments are still intact and the joint feels stable
You want the smallest procedure that will genuinely solve the problem
Not every arthritic knee qualifies, and the only way to know is to look at the joint itself. Dr. Mitchell reviews your imaging and examines the joint, then tells you honestly whether a partial will hold up or whether a total knee replacement is the more durable answer.
Not every worn-out knee needs replacement.
Your knee has three compartments, and arthritis often wears out only one of them. When that happens, a total knee replacement solves the problem, but it also removes healthy cartilage and cuts ligaments that were doing their job perfectly well. For a lot of patients, that is more surgery than the knee actually needs.
A partial knee replacement resurfaces only the damaged compartment and leaves the rest of the joint alone, including the cruciate ligaments that give your knee its natural sense of position and control. That is the main reason patients so often describe a partial as feeling like their own knee rather than a replacement. The incision is smaller, less bone is removed, and recovery is typically the fastest of any joint replacement we perform, around four weeks for most patients.
Precision is what makes this work. The margin for error in a partial knee is small, so Dr. James Mitchell performs these carefully, planning the implant position from your own anatomy and holding the bone preparation to fine tolerances during surgery. Paired with the same opioid-free protocol and same-day discharge as our other procedures, most patients are home the same evening and back to normal life quickly.
What Partial Knee Recovery Actually Looks Like
Less surgery up front is exactly why the milestones arrive faster.
Day of Surgery
You are up and walking within a few hours, often with only light support, and most patients head home the same evening.
First Two Weeks
Swelling stays lower than it does after a total knee, so bending comes back quickly. You walk often, work on straightening the knee fully, and most patients are off assistive devices within days.
Weeks Three to Six
Normal routines return. Most patients are driving, back at work, and walking without thinking about it, with higher-impact activity cleared around the four-week mark.
Every plan is different because every patient is. Yours will be built around your life, not a template.
